Tips on How to Use 10% Less Water
Outside
When to water: Try watering your lawn before the sun comes up to save water. When you water during the middle of the day, up to half of the water can evaporate. Also, check the weather to make sure it isn’t going to rain before you water.
Sprinkler placement: Ensure the water from your sprinklers are landing on the grass and not the sidewalks or streets to save extra water.
Washing your car: Use a bucket of water and a sponge instead of a running hose to wash your car. A hose can waste 6 gallons a minute while running but filling up a bucket and using a sponge will only use a few gallons.
Leaks: Inspect your irrigation system for leaks and damaged sprinkler heads that may cause excessive or unintended water loss.
Inside
Dishwashers: Modern dishwashers use around 3–5 gallons of water every time you run them. Run your dishwasher only when it’s full of dishes to save water.
Showers: If you shorten your shower by 1 minute every time you shower, you can save up to 150 gallons a month!
Washing machine: If you have an older washing machine, they don’t automatically adjust the amount of water based on the size of the laundry load. Try only washing the laundry with a full load or adjust the load level when washing small amounts of clothes.
Running water: Turn off the tap water when brushing your teeth, shaving, or washing your face to save water. You can save 8 gallons by turning off the tap in the morning and in the evening while brushing your teeth.
Leaks: Check for leaks throughout the house. A small leak in a toilet could be wasting about 200 gallons a day.
